What is Nuxt.js?

Vue.js & Nuxt.js Published on , updated on · 3 min read

Nuxt.js is a framework built on Vue.js that provides a structure for developing websites and web applications. It adds a routing system, project conventions, and several rendering strategies, including server-side rendering and static generation.

Nuxt.js can be used for editorial websites, content-rich platforms, or frontend applications. The choice depends on the functional needs, how often the data changes, and the technical constraints.

Nuxt.js: a framework built on Vue.js

Vue.js is a JavaScript framework for building user interfaces. Nuxt.js builds on Vue.js and organizes application development around conventions and additional features.

This structure can make it easier to create pages, manage routing, and choose a rendering mode. It doesn’t mean every project should use Nuxt.js: a simple Vue.js application may be enough in some contexts.

What is Nuxt.js used for?

Nuxt.js can be used to build websites where content must be quickly accessible, interactive interfaces, or applications that need a structured frontend architecture.

It can also be paired with a headless CMS, such as Strapi, to separate content management from presentation. This architecture is useful in some projects, but it adds parts to design and maintain.

Key features of Nuxt.js

Server-side rendering and static generation

Server-side rendering (SSR) generates the HTML on the server for each request. Static generation (SSG) prepares pages in advance. Nuxt.js also lets you adapt the rendering strategy to your needs.

SSR can be relevant for data that must be refreshed on demand. SSG can suit content that changes less often. The choice depends on caching, deployment, and the freshness you expect.

Routing and project structure

Nuxt.js offers a routing system based on how the project’s files are organized. This convention helps structure pages and manage navigation paths.

The structure makes development easier, but it should stay consistent with the size and needs of the application.

Data fetching and API integration

A website can fetch its data from an API, a CMS, or an internal service. The integration must handle loading states, errors, missing data, and caching needs.

In a headless project, the Nuxt.js frontend displays the content provided by the CMS. Content models and the exchanges between systems must therefore be designed carefully.

SEO and performance

Nuxt.js offers rendering options that can help make content available in the HTML. It also lets you manage page metadata. However, no framework guarantees good search rankings.

Content quality, architecture, internal links, indexability, and performance must be checked on the deployed website.

Which projects can use Nuxt.js?

Nuxt.js can suit an editorial website, a directory, a content platform, a business interface, or an application that needs a personalized experience. It is especially important to assess how often data changes, the number of pages, the integrations, and the skills available for maintenance.

For a simple website with standard editorial administration, a CMS like WordPress can sometimes meet the need with less custom development.

Is Nuxt.js right for your project?

Before choosing Nuxt.js, clarify the essential features, the type of content, the rendering constraints, the integrations, and the maintenance resources. The framework should solve a concrete need, not add complexity without a clear benefit.

Working with a Nuxt.js developer

I work on Vue.js and Nuxt.js projects, including applications connected to a headless CMS. I can support you with development, evolution, or a technical review of an existing project.
